Why Responsive Web Design Will Make You More Money

Viktor Kis

Surprisingly, in 2015 a lot of business websites still haven’t switched over to responsive web design. It causes us physical pain when we see potential customers leave your website because they’re pinching-and-zooming their way around your website on their phones when all they want to do is just spend their money on your products or services.

Updating your website to responsive design should have been your priority yesterday if you’re a business owner that takes themselves and their business seriously. Mobile-friendly design affects all aspects of your online presence, ranging from rankings to customer experience to brand image to lead generation. It’s so important now that Google has recently released a new algorithm update that penalizes your site if it doesn’t play well with smartphones.

If you are a business owner and thinking about updating your website, take a look at why your business needs to be mobile-friendly right now:

Rankings, Search Engines, And More

On April 21st, 2015, Google launched a search algorithm update aimed at preferential positioning of mobile-friendly sites in search engine results pages (SERPs). This means that if your site isn’t responsive, traffic from smartphones you’ve been enjoying previously may have disappeared from your website, costing you visitors and leads. This update was nicknamed “Mobilegeddon” by industry experts since it was supposed to have such a large impact on rankings. The update was bigger than their two previous updates (Penguin and Panda) combined which shows just how important Google considers mobile-friendly sites. They are going even as far as showing in search engine results which page is “mobile-friendly” even before you would click through to the website.

Mobile Traffic Surpassed Desktop Traffic – Like, A While Ago

Mobile phones and tablets are ubiquitous in our everyday lives. If someone needs to search information about a business on the go they just tap in a few keywords and there is your chance to shine. Mobile traffic surpassed desktop traffic in early 2014 and has been growing ever since. This trend doesn’t look like it’s going to change. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re setting yourself up for declining leads and traffic.

Better User Experience

Many businesses listen to what their customers want when they call or come to the store. Naturally, this is just good old customer service, right? So why wouldn’t you try and provide the same professional approach and practical help online? The very first interaction a user has with your business will be your website and this is your chance to show them a professional image, brand experience and lead them through your sales funnel to convert into leads.

A clumsy website will deter people from contacting you if they can’t find what they are searching for. Your contact information should always be easy to access and present on all pages of the mobile version of your site (I mean, people are probably looking at it on their phones after all – they’re literally just a few taps away from giving you a call or shooting you an email). An overall pleasant user experience will help you throughout the entire purchasing process, making it easier to leave a good impression.

Load Times

A website’s load time is largely influenced by whether it’s responsive or not. A mobile-friendly site loads faster and since you only have a few seconds until a prospect gets fed up and jumps over to your competitors’ site this needs to be a priority for your business. Customers also don’t like waiting for large sites to load since this also uses sizeable chunks of their precious, precious data when they’re using their smartphone on-the-go.
