All This Fuss About Web Development

Sergiy

How did I get into it?

To be honest, I was “forced” into it by my older brother. At this point, do I mind not having made the decision myself? Not at all. Web development is growing, and there is no stopping it. What fascinates me the most, is how open it is – from absolutely nothing, to whatever you want it to be. The amount of time it takes to create a new application is becoming shorter and shorter. With frameworks like Meteor, you can have a fully functioning web application within hours, which would have taken months a couple of years ago.

What about web design?

A lot of people are still confused as to what the difference between being a web developer and a web designer is. While I could go into great detail explaining the differences, the most efficient and fun way to sum this up is to check out this infographic.

Is web development necessary?

With the way things are looking, yes. Now this doesn’t mean that EVERYONE should go and learn how to make code magically transform into websites, but getting a general sense of it would be beneficial, especially if you’re working for a digital marketing company. If you know how everything in the background works, it’s going to be a lot easier for you to explain to clients what’s going on and why they are getting the conversion numbers that they are getting. If you want to sell your services to a client, someone who has in-depth knowledge about the process of making a website and all the baggage that comes with it, will be able to communicate with a client a lot more clearly and in a more concise way, as opposed to someone who just knows how to sell a product or service.

Is it as easy as some people think it is? See for yourself

What I can tell you for certain about web development:

  • It’s definitely a great asset to have no matter what field you’re currently in
  • Your work speaks for itself, so the better you are, the more money you’ll make (shhh, don’t tell the designers)
  • I love it

If you are looking for a way to get involved, don’t hesitate. Personally, I didn’t go through the conventional way of learning things. The awesome thing about this field is, it was born online, and it lives online. The amount of resources available to guide you through learning web development is unbelievable, it’s hard to say where to start. The Odin Project is a great open source project you can dive into, as well as tons of online schools and other projects.

Go ahead, get cracking at learning new technology, because trust me, there is a whole other world behind your computer screen that you’re missing out on.
