BestBuy Launches Video Sharing Site – Stunningly Named “Best Buy Video Sharing”

Clive Lobo

Who would have thought that BestBuy would be the next company to jump into the video sharing / social networking world?

Certainly not me – but here they are. BestBuy has announced they are going to launch a video sharing site which allows customers to safely store and share proprietary videos on the Internet. Can they possibly compete with YouTube? Can they possibly stomach having to handle all of the copyright infringements and legal hassles that go with it?

What’s a little odd about this foray into the market is that they are charging around $7 per 100 minutes of video. So, this can’t possibly be geared to retail consumers. Perhaps it’s geared toward business – but then what the heck does business need with a video storage site – presumably they have their own servers for that. I read through the Terms and Conditions but did not find anything out of the ordinary.

Personally – I don’t understand why BestBuy would get into Video. Why not a social networking site around gadgets? Stuff they sell and which would not produce a myriad of legal battles?

What’s your opinion – can you help me understand why they would choose video?
